WHIPLASH TREATMENT INFORMATION

This injury usually occurs following a rear or side impact road traffic accident which can lead to the victim’s head being jerked backward and then forward causing damage to the soft tissue of the neck including muscles, tendons, cartilage and nerve fibres. Most of the time sprains and strains to the neck are left untreated however failure to recognise the injury and treat it appropriately can result in more severe problems in the future. Whiplash treatment should be offered to victims as soon as their injuries have been diagnosed. If you have been involved in a motor accident and have suffered neck pain you should seek professional medical advice without delay.

There may be discomfort immediately following the accident however the pain and discomfort usually takes a few days to fully develop which means that whiplash treatment may be delayed. If left untreated minor injuries may deteriorate into more serious conditions. Recent studies have revealed that a large number of victims go on to develop osteo-arthritis when they did not receive timely treatment.

Whiplash treatment may include:-

  • use of a soft cervical collar to immobilise the neck for a short period only
  • use of pharmaceutical drugs including painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication and muscle relaxants
  • physiotherapy including light exercise to reduce muscle spasms which may include moist heat, ice, ultrasound and electrical stimulation
  • cervical traction
  • local anaesthetic trigger point injections to alleviate pain and tenderness
  • surgical intervention in rare and severe cases involving persistent or chronic pain for removal of intervertebral disc or fusion of several vertebrae which may be combined with rods and screws for stability of the neck

We can arrange for you to visit an independent medical professional who can help assess your claim and provide private whiplash treatment at an early stage to help resolve the problems associated with acceleration/deceleration injury.
